Presented by Dr. Julia Carter (she/her), & Natalie Anderson (she/her), Alberta Health Services. On October 1, 2018 the province of Alberta funded HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication for eligible individuals. Sexual and Reproductive Clinics in Calgary expanded their sexual health services to meet the demand for PrEP in Calgary. Attend this presentation to learn more about HIV PrEP, our experiences providing this important service in Calgary, and what we see happening with PrEP in Alberta going forward.

Dr. Julia Carter is a family physician with a half-time practice in Calgary, and also the Medical Director of the Sexual and Reproductive Health clinics, AHS Calgary. She completed an undergraduate degree in microbiology in the late 1980s, a time when there were very few medications to treat HIV and treatments were much less effective than they are now. She attended medical school at U. of C. and completed her family medicine residency at Queen’s University in Kingston.

Natalie Anderson is a Registered Nurse and Clinical Instructor with Alberta Health Services Sexual and Reproductive Health Clinics in Calgary, Alberta and has worked in the area of sexual health since 2009. In her current role she works with clinical staff to ensure best practice in the provision of sexual health care through staff training and support and the development of guidelines and policy. Her interests include normalizing sexual health as part of caring for our overall health, harm reduction approaches to care, and promoting welcoming, safe and inclusive health care spaces.
